A pigmented lesion is a spot that contains an abnormal concentration of the skin pigment, melanin. Some lesions can be present at birth and others result from over-exposure to sunlights damaging ultraviolet radiation. These spots can be unnoticeable but may make one feel that they detract from ones natural beauty, especially if they are large or present on the face.The Medlite C6 laser is one of the most technologically advanced lasers for removing pigmented lesions. It emits laser light that is absorbed by the melanin in the pigmented lesion, causing it to disappear or lighten. The types of lesions most commonly removed are age spots / liver spots, freckles, and birthmarks, such as café-au-lait spots. After removal of the abnormal concentrations of melanin in the pigmented lesion, lightening of the underlying skin should not occur unless treatment is continued after disappearance of the lesion. However, this is temporary, as your body’s normal regenerative system would return the skin to its normal color over a period of time. Moles are not removed by the Medlite laser. They are too thick for effective laser treatment, and can be surgically removed to make sure that there are no melanoma cells within them. The laser energy does cause some pain as it hits the surface of the skin, similar to the snap of a rubber band. At Tattoo MD, this is minimized by the use of anesthetic cream and a device tat blows cold air on the area. After the treatment, there may be redness, bruising, and, occasionally, blistering. Typically, any discomfort will disappear within a day or two. Gradual lightening of the pigmented lesion occurs over the next 4-6 weeks. Pigmented lesions are sometimes removed in only one or two treatments. Some deeper lesions will require more treatments. Common pigmented lesions do not return.
